This course will provide students with an introduction to to several methods of art making. Students will work with drawing pencils, paint (tempura and acrylic), and mixed media, and will learn how to create various effects using each medium. References to significant artists will be a part of each session to provide students wiht creative motivation and an appreciation of various styles of working. Subjects studied will include realistic representations such as landscape and still life, as well as abstract design and imaginary recreations that provide an opportunity to synthesize skills into personal creative expressions.

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of drama and performance through a variety of theatre games and activities, utilizing music, props, puppets, and other materials for hands-on learning. Students in this younger class will focus on listening and cooperation skills and will also learn the vocabulary used by actors and directors when they create a production. The students will have an opportunity to share what they’ve learned by joining the older class in a production of Shakepeare’s “Macbeth” that will be performed April 20, 2012 at Pawling Elementary School and on April 21 at the Akin Library and Natural History Museum.

Students in grades 3 - 8 will learn the fundamentals of acting technique through the use of theatre games and improvisations. The use of focused improvisations will help these students develop an understanding of dramatic conflict and narrative structure, as well as how to make a scene more realistic through sense-memory techniques. Voice projection, relaxation techniques, character development and scene study will be included as the students work on developing a production of Shakepeareʼs “Macbeth”, to be performed April 20, 2012 at Pawling Elementary School.

Please note:Our theatre students will perform Shakespeareʼs “Macbeth” on April 20. Unlike in previous years, this program will not be accepting new students in the second session. Students who wish to participate in this year’s production must join during the first session!

Students in grades 3 and 4 will learn the basics of working with Lego robotics, working in small groups to build robots that can meet simple challenges given by the instructor. The cornerstones of this program emphasize friendly sportsmanship, contributions of others, learning, team work and community involvement.
